Anti Intellectualism

In Penrod’s essay “Anti-Intellectualism: Why We Hate the Smart Kids” he writes about how in today’s society we tend to glorify the non-intellectuals by referring to athletes and celebrities with less than impressive academic achievement. Others look to these people as heroes. For example “In more than a few cases athletes’ income surpass the gross national product of some third-world countries”(“Money,Contracts, and Switzerland”). Penrod’s use of sources are taken from a variety of mediums, one of which was internet forums. I thought that his use of actual posts from teenagers in school was a perfect example of the kind of thoughts that spread the feelings of anti-intellectualism. With the essay being about people’s feelings or actions toward a certain other group of people i feel that an internet forum is the perfect source. I absolutely aggree with Penrod’s essay, I feel that the way we glorify the “jocks” and ignore the “nerds” is something that is reinforced through the school system and the media as we grow up and those thoughts carry on into our adult lives.

I lazily make my way into his room, I figure if I’m gonna do nothing I might as well be comfortable. I nudge open the door with my snout and hop onto the bed which Isn’t made. I perfer it that way because then I can usually find a nice fold in the blanket to use as a pillow. My belly now full from dinner I let out a nice long yawn and rest my head on the blanket. With my keen sense of hearing I can make out Garik’s footsteps as he makes his way upstairs, and if my nose is correct he also has something to eat. I try to hide my excitement as he walks into his room and sits at his computer desk. Papers and books hide most of the desk surface and he sets his plate right on top of it. He begins to tear into the food like its his last meal and I slowly make my way over. Being sure not to disturb the beast I stratigicly hide myself under the desk and wait for him to unevitibly drop a scrap of his sandwitch. The grilled chicken breast is calling me. Its sweet tender warmth only a foot or two away. Time for a new stratigy, I cant wait much longer, so I make my way out from under the desk and sit at his side. I innocently look up at him and let out a little wimper. My ear flops over to one side, there’s no way that he’ll be able to resist feading me now. He casually looks over and gives me a scratch behind my ear, not exactly what I was looking for you greedy bastard, but it is still welcome. His eyes quickly go back to the computer as he begins typing furiously. I try again, this time he rips a piece of his sandwitch and gives it to me. Finally, I quickly scarf it down incase he changes his mind and make my way back to the bed. Now I can get some sleep.

Thinking about what to write about for the next essay i originally had a few ideas. I could write about home, where i work, or a restaurant. These ideas either seemed too basic or not interesting enough. I am still working on a few different ideas but i am leaning towards writing about somewhere downtown i haven’t been yet. i feel that writing about somewhere i will be experiencing for the first time will have a positive impact on my writing.

Where am I

As the white snow covers and slowly hides the city I remain, standing tall above it all. My great stone walls have been forged to withstand any attack. The great oak doors that lead to my insides rattle and shake, but they will not budge. Reaching into the clouds my peaks stand strong and proud as if to say “Give me your worst!!”

Standing tall in this arctic desert my halls echo the sound of the wind creaping through the cracks of my stained glass windows.

In all honesty I wasn’t really looking forward to moving to Pittsburgh. I don’t recall ever seeing or hearing anything about the city in the media that would have influenced my opinion on it. I actually didn’t know a single thing about the city before I moved here. So my first impression of the city was when my family and I were driving to our new house, i had no idea what the city or Pennsylvania was like until I had arrived. The first thing I noticed on my drive was the hills. I had never seen anything like it. Back in Michigan the land was very flat and the roads were set up in a grid like fashion, so when I got off the turnpike I had a tough time navigating the winding roads that swerved around and through the many hills of Pennsylvania. Then came the tunnel that would lead me to my first look at Pittsburgh. As I drove though the tunnel I tried to catch a glimpse of what could be on the other side, trying to peak through the vehicles that were driving ahead of me all I could manage to see was the bright light that awaited at the end of the tunnel. Closer and closer I crept until finally I had entered the blinding light and got my first glimpse of Pittsburgh. I had never seen anything like it. With the city being surrounded by mountains and elevated roads it reminded me of something that belonged in a science fiction movie. I was eager and excited to go out and explore the new city that had become my home.

I thought that moving to Pittsburgh would be a big lifestyle change for me. New people, new environment, and new experiences were waiting here for me. The more I try to analyze the experience of being in a new city the more I realize that it isn’t all that different than home. I’ve lived in Pittsburgh for almost two years now.  I originally lived in Northville Michigan, about 15 minutes from Detroit, and now I live in Mt. Lebonon, about 15 minutes from Pittsburgh. First moving here Pittsburgh had a sense of excitement to it, with so much to explore and see. Time passed and life became a cycle of work and school. I started to realize that my lifestyle hadn’t changed much from when in lived in Michigan. My life had gone through a more discrete change than I originally thought it had.  It was like the frame had changed but the picture hadn’t. I never saw this as something negative, I am just surprised at how quickly I had adapted.
